This document is about George Fitzhugh and his opinions on Slavery around the world. George Fitzhugh is a social theorist that lived in the 1800's and was famous for his theories that the "negro" was "a grown up child". In this article, Fitzhugh expresses how he feels toward the topic. He uses examples from around the world, and also explains many other opinions on the topic that he feels.
What does Fitzhugh consider to be the basic failures of the northern states and France?
Fitzhugh argues that in smaller communities the experiment is not possible. His main arguement lies in competition. He argues first that small communities in Europe are not fit for the system. Then he continues and says, "Add to the evidence of these social philosophers, who, watching closely the working of the system, have proclaimed to the world its total failure, the condition of the working classes, and we have conclusive proof that liberty and equality have not conduced to enhance the comfort or the happiness of the people". When he says that he implies that the failures of the northern states and France are that they cease to understand that the problem is not liberty and equality. He does not coherently shout the differences in races, but he does explain that liberty and equality does not enchance any comfort or happiness to people. Furthermore explaining, he subliminally implies that you willl need more than just equality to enchance happiness in life. Which continues his next arguement of competition. To sum up, his primary reasoning behind the failure of France and the Northern states is they yet to realize that equality and liberty through the mass is not the right answer.
According to Fitzhugh, what is the proper status and role of women?
Fitzhugh fights that woman don't have the proper ability and skill to handle the competitive world. He starts by explaining, " Look to the situation of woman when she is thrown into this war of competition, and has to support herself by her daily wages. For the same or equally valuable services she gets not half the pay that man does, simply because the modesty of her sex prevents her from resorting to all the arts and means of competition which men employ. He who would emancipate woman, unless he could make her as coarse and strong in mind and body as man, would be her worst enemy; her subservience to and dependence on man, is necessary to her very existence. She is not a soldier fitted to enlist in the war of free competition." With this he clearly s tates that woman does not have what it takes in the world of physical labor nor competition. He also says, "She is not a soldier fitted to enlist in the war of free competition". Through Fitzhugh's opinion, woman are nothing but a means to a way of carrying children into the world and pleasing her spouse. In harsh explanation, he basically exerts how woman are merely "Grown-up Children". He explains how woman are not set out alone because they would get destroyed a world among men. His bold statements explain how he feels about women and how they are nothing but slaves to their spouse anyhow.
Give some examples that illustrate why Fitzhugh considers slavery to be superior to free labor.
Fizhugh carefully illustrates how slavery is superior through many key examples. One way he determines that it is superior is through the example of the natural world. He argues by saying, "We, however, witness the war, but do not see the improvement. Although from the earliest date of recorded history, one race of plants has been eating out and taking the place of another, the stronger or more cunning animals been destroying the feebler, and man exterminating and supplanting his fellow, still the plants, the animals and the men of to-day seem not at all superior, even in those qualities of strength and hardihood to which they owe their continued existence, to those of thousands of years ago". With this example he illustrates that slavery is far superior than free labor. He says how even the natural world of animals and plants has done it before us. It is a part of nature itself. Another way he illustrates that it is superior to free labor is through the Southern States. Through slavery, he says things are done faster and more efficiently. He says, "Domestic slavery in the Southern States has produced the same results in elevating the character of the master that it did in Greece and Rome". With saying, he proves that slavery is the key to the human advancement. To sum up, Fitzhugh bold man who believes that many issues can be resolved through slavery. His extravagent theories of slaveries come with many key points, but are not perfect.

The Reflection
Writing about this artifact was very interesting. I really enjoyed doing this assignment. This assignment was about George Fitzhugh, and his opinions on slavery. Who is George Fitzhugh was the first question I had going into this assignment. Throughout the course of my life learning history, I've never learneda bout George Fitzhugh. However, after reading one of his primary sources, I learned a lot about him. He's one of the more interesting people to learn and read about. He was a radical believer in slavery and fought for it. His opinions about slavery and women was extreme to todays standards. He thought slavery was necessary just like survival of the fittest. However, after reading this assignment and doing it, I think what helped me developed the most was seeing into others shoes, when I don't really agree with it. He has a radical opinion on slavery, and although I disagree with his thoughts, I think learning them were still very interesting. I think in life, you will meet people and learn things that you might not disagree on but, you should always respect what you learn and what others opinions are. Through this assignment I got a better grasp of what it means to do so. Through doing this assignment, I do feel that my academic skills have drastically improved because it really taught me to respect and understand opinions that aren't mine and that I don't agree with. With that skill improving I'm certain that in the future, i'll look back onto this assignment and remember it and why it helped me in my future endeavors. My learning goals for my next assignment include taking what I learned from this into consideration. I think from now on, no matter how strange or dumb the opinion or article I read is to me, I'll try to learn from it and view it's standpoint.
If I could change one thing about this assignment I did, It would be to add more quotes from the context. I think the biggest problem, I didn't get 100% on this was because I did not add text from the book for the class. I did not realize that until the end of this class. From now on, I'm going to try reading assignments and announcements better. Because of this assignment though, I will be able to do analyze of different viewpoints some of which I don't agree with in the future. That's a truly important thing everyone has to learn.
