The Assignment
Jefferson’s Inaugural Address (Links to an external site.)
- How is Jefferson’s Inagural Address a reflection of the, “Revolution of 1800”?
The Revolution of the 1800 was a feared race between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. This Revolution of 1800 was started because Federalist feared that Jefferson would change America by dismantling the army and changing Hamilton’s financial system. They were worried that Jefferson would cause a revolution. Many people during this time were extremely worried about this election. Also, this win of Jefferson, marked a 28 year period which Republicans ruled politics. Some say this is because of the public anger over the Federalist act of Alien and Sedition. With this, Jefferson in his speech says, “All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression.” He explains as it clearly shows, he’s not going to be like the federalist. No unjust laws will be passed and everything will be equal for the people. He states the law must protect which triumphs America. This shows that Jefferson is showing, he is going to go with the people for the people showing what a true Democracy is capable of. As he continues, “Let us, then, fellow-citizens, unite with one heart and one mind.” He says that showing that, he will be the one that unites the citizens. With this he shows how the Republicans will dominate for the next decades.
- What did Jefferson mean when he said, “We are all Republicans we are all Federalist”?
In his second paragraph of his speech, Jefferson says, “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists”. That line blew the crowd away. It is to my belief, he said that to further unite America. I think the deeper meaning behind this quote is more than just Federalist and Republicans. I believe it goes to the heart of America, which means although there are many different people in America and many different beliefs, they are all united as one. He says this to further strengthen the bonds of the people in America. I think the greater meaning behind “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalist” is behind what we believe in and what we stand for, we are all in it together and our differences should not stop us from being a great nation. I truly think that is the strongest quote in his entire speech.
The Reflection
Reflection #2
In this document interpretation, I did Jefferson’s Inagural Address. I talked about how the 1800’s was a presidential race between two people. Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. While writing this assignment, I think the ability to implement quotes into my writing was drastically developed. I started to scan the inaugural address for quotes that could help me better answer the question. Then I tried to see how the quotes correlate to how I think and feel. For example, I used Jefferson’s quote, “All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression” to better argue my point. With that quote, I said that Jefferson won’t pass unjust laws. I think implementing quotes is very crucial to analyzing and interpretations.
I do feel that this assignment has progressed my academic skill slowly. I believe that every little assignment you do further benefits your academic ability. Even if it’s by a little I feel that the littlest things all add up over time. Although this one assignment didn’t change my ability to think or feel, it did help my brain slowly get better at interpretations. I see academic abilities as a game. The more you practice learning and doing assignments, the more experience you gain and overtime your ability to think levels up and your brain expands. Although it’s an intricate analogy, it’s the way why I believe that this assignment has slowly progressed my skills in writing.
Although, I did my best for this assignment, I wish there were a few things I did better. I really wish during my analysis, I tried to explain the quotes more. That’s one of my weakest points. I also feel like I have to provide more facts about Thomas Jefferson and his beliefs in order to further back up my interpretation. Lastly, I wish I provided a more straight forward answer for the questions. If I could go back I would really spend a bit more time on each part of the interpretation and even try harder because every assignment in life counts and it is a shame to not try your best.
Outside of class, there are many things I would do to better myself for the next project. I feel like although it isn’t as relevant, a good sleeping schedule really prepares the brain to do homework assignments and classwork activities. Also, I would try to give myself a bit more time to do the following assignments so I can re-read and edit each assignment. However, after doing this I’ve learned that if I do the following things above, I’ll definitely do better next time and achieve the maximum points for every assignment.
